I recently started using my Chromecast as something more than a youtube-on-tv type of device. I subscribed on Netflix and at the same time I installed the Plex Media Server and it's various associated Plex clients. The main playback device is the Chromecast but my TV doesn't present DD and DTS in its EDID on the HDMI ports. Funny thing, it DOES support DD on the HDMI because when set manually on my PS3 it accepts it and passes it through just fine, even decodes it for its own speakers! The TV is hooked to an older audio system that decodes DD and DTS only via S/PDIF.So, an HDMI audio extractor was the obvious solution. I ordered this product and after I installed I forgot its existence really as it does its simple job as it's supposed to. I got a bit disappointed when I discovered that it wouldn't work for Netflix, but that can't be helped, Netflix uses DD+ which can be used only with newer A/V Receivers that have HDMI inputs and decode the newer digital audio formats.Overall, 5/5 from me as it allows me to use my existing audio/video setup with newer streaming technologies with a fraction of the cost that would be necessary for a proper upgrade.

This little device worked great for my needs. I'm using an old computer monitor for a display, running the audio through a separate external amplifier and getting video from a Blu-Ray player. When the player died, I upgraded to a Sony UBP-X800 which is working great. Unfortunately, the new Sony players like the UBP-X800 don't have L/R audio outputs, in fact they only have HDMI and that's it. Fortunately I was able to add-on this little extra for about 20 dollars, and voila! I how have a great picture and great audio. One of the great things about this device is that you can truly "set and forget" it. I was able to plug it in and have it up and working 30 seconds after I got it out of the box, and I haven't had to do anything since. It's really a great little device.

Bought this for a home theater project; my goal for this project was to go as minimalist as possible, reducing the components needed to just a handful of devices, and I think I got it. This device is currently being used to extract the audio from my Roku and piping it out to a set of speakers I purchased; the video portion of the signal is then being sent to a video projector. Audio is coming in through the HDMI port, and I extracting the audio out through the RCA ports, and so far everything seems to be going as planned.I was skeptical over the quality of sound I was going to get out of this device, not because I didn't trust the brand, but because I've never used this kind of an adapter before. I wasn't sure which unit to buy, and relied heavily on the feedback other have left. Luckily there's some really good feedback for this item from other people who've purchased this in the past.Build quality looks solid, didn't hear anything rattling inside. This device is almost as small as a Roku 3; roughly the same thickness, but just a little wider than the Roku.As previously mention, I'm using a 2:1 speaker setup with this unit and I do not pick up on any weird distortion artifacts in the audio quality coming out of it. I've tested this on three different speaker systems, with one of the three test being a headphone set.Overall, I'm impressed with this device and would have no issues recommending it to other folks looking for a similar product.

I never write reviews, good or bad, but in this case the manufacturer invited me to do so. I have been looking for a device like this since I have a pretty decent analog receiver. Analog and therefore old. I also have only two speakers (stereo only) accompanied by a subwoofer. Speakers are of good quality and are primarily for music, but are obviously also used for all the other stuff, including TV and games. Replacing the receiver with like quality and HDMI inputs will cost over $1500 dollar. I obviously did not want to do that since I am still happy with the old.But most new equipment coming out (XBOX One in my case) only has HDMI and does not offer analog out. Hence the need for a converter. So I bought this device for around $40. Based on the description it should work for me, and it does. Audio sounds very good and the LCD flat screen TV (Sony) tells me it is receiving 1080p from the input. Picture quality again looks good. I do not see or hear and quality degradation. I have not measured anything, so just ears and eyes testing :).The device lays on the ground underneath the cabinet that houses my equipment. I had already forgotten about it until I got the email request to do a review.I am giving 4 stars because I never give 5 unless there is really, really, really nothing to complain. The analog out connectors are a little loose. I tried two different brands of cables and they both easily came off. But like I said, once it is out of sight it is out of mind. It has been working flawlessly since December 25, 2013.

Received today. Works as advertised. Plug and Play. Smaller than I envisioned. Quite warm to the touch when in use - hope that doesn't signal a short life span. We're using ours with a Windows 8 PC, a plasma TV, and a non-HDMI, S/PDIF stereo receiver/amplifier. Without this unit, we were limited to analog audio to the stereo OR HDMI audio to the TV. Now, we have digital audio to each device simultaneously. Mute the TV sound if we want to use the stereo, turn off the stereo if we want just TV sound. When not watching TV, we enjoy listening to music from various web sites with the stereo on and the TV off. If you do this from a PC, be sure to go into Control Panel - Power Options - Change plan settings - and set Turn off the display to sometime longer than you would normally be listening. Ours was set by default to 10 minutes, and 10 minutes after we turned the TV off, the PC would kill the HDMI output to this unit, silencing the stereo. Selecting a longer turn off time fixed that issue. Remember that you'll need an additional HDMI cable to install this unit.
